VPAS, the local Area Agency on Aging, has empowered those 60 years and older with the resources and opportunities they need to lead engaged lives since 1974.  Our focus is on helping individuals and caregivers successfully navigate the changes and challenges that come with aging.  VPAS' Senior Leadership Team embraces employee feedback and input for improving the services we offer in the community in order to be relevant and timely.

Executive Director

VPAS is accepting interested applicants for a full-time Executive Director

POSITION:  Executive Director

LOCATION: 325 Pine Avenue, Waynesboro, VA

DAYS/HOURS: Monday through Friday / 40 hours a week

START DATE: Negotiable

RESPONSIBILITIES:  The VPAS Executive Director (ED) reports to the VPAS Board of Directors. The ED has overall strategic and operational responsibility for VPAS staff, programs, financial stability and pursuit of the VPAS mission. The ED’s primary responsibilities include Leadership, Staffing, Program Delivery, Communication, Development, and Budget and Finance.

QUALIFICATIONS: Successful candidates will have a positive attitude and be thoroughly committed to the VPAS mission; be action-oriented, entrepreneurial, and adaptable; have demonstrated leadership, coaching and relationship management skills; have demonstrated success in working with and staffing a nonprofit Board of Directors; have demonstrated strong public relations, marketing and fundraising skills; have demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills; have demonstrated success in organizational management.

Educational requirements include a degree from an accredited college or university in such fields as Public Administration, Business Administration, Gerontology, Social Work, or Nursing. A certain amount of training and experience may be substituted at the Board’s discretion. Experience in aging or human services at the management level and experience with resource development is preferred.

Medicare Intake Specialist

VPAS is accepting applications for a part-time Medicare Intake Specialist position in the Staunton/Augusta/Waynesboro (SAW) region to support our Medicare Insurance Counseling (VICAP) program.

DAYS/HOURS: The hours per week will vary through the year between 12-35 hours per week. The hours will be worked Monday through Friday at a schedule agreeable to both the selected candidate and the supervisor. Specifics can be provided upon request. 

POSITION: The Medicare Intake Specialist contacts individuals who have upcoming appointments with a VPAS VICAP Counselor to remind the person of their appointment and to gather initial client information to start the Intake Form for the appointment to help the appointments go smoothly and efficiently. During Open Enrollment they will also ask the individuals to submit prescription drug lists ahead of time and file those for Counselor reference.  The Medicare Intake Specialist will primarily be supporting the 8 staff and volunteer Counselors in Staunton, Augusta, and Waynesboro (SAW), but may also perform similar tasks supporting counselors in other VPAS regions.  

QUALIFICATIONS: Successful candidates must have excellent computer, communication, organization and time management skills; and be able to work independently and as part of a team.  Attention to detail, compliance with confidentiality rules, and sensitivity in working with vulnerable populations are a must.

Assistant Medicare Counseling Program Coordinator

VPAS is accepting applicants for an Assistant Medicare Counseling Program Coordinator. 

DAYS/HOURS: The hours per week will vary through the year between 24-40 hours per week. The hours will be worked Monday through Friday at a schedule agreeable to both the selected candidate and the supervisor. Specifics can be provided upon request. 

POSITION: The Assistant Medicare Counseling Program Coordinator will be responsible for managing volunteer Medicare Insurance Counselors (VICAP) throughout VPAS, providing outreach presentations, and helping to schedule and track training for all VICAP Counselors. They will also be a fully certified Medicare Insurance Counselor who provides health insurance information, assistance, and referral services to individuals age 65 and over and those with disabilities eligible for Medicare. Counselors assist individuals new to Medicare to understand their options, including enrollment in Part A, B, Medicare Advantage (MA), and Prescription Drug Plans (PDPs); and Medicare supplement information and comparisons. They also screen individuals for eligibility for various cost savings programs and provide counseling for individuals eligible for both Medicaid and Medicare.  The Assistant Medicare Counseling Program Coordinator will conduct in-person appointments with Medicare beneficiaries from the Waynesboro VPAS offices and have phone and/or Zoom appointments to serve individuals from any VPAS service area. 

QUALIFICATIONS: Successful candidates must have prior experience  working with older adults, preferably in a human services setting;  have excellent computer, analytical, communication, organization and time management skills; and be able to work independently and as part of a team.  Experience managing volunteers preferred.  Attention to detail, compliance with confidentiality rules, and sensitivity in working with vulnerable populations are a must.  Candidates who currently hold a license to sell insurance are not eligible to apply. Continued employment is contingent on successfully completing training and state certification as a VICAP Counselor.

Team Support Specialist

VPAS is accepting interested applicants for a part-time Team Support Specialist/Senior Transportation Driver position for Maury River Senior Services.

DAYS/HOURS: Flexible scheduling of 20 hours per week, Monday-Friday, 8am-4pm.

LOCATION: Maury River Senior Services, 2137 Magnolia Avenue, Buena Vista, VA

POSITION: The Team Support Specialist/Senior Transportation Driver (TSS) provides support as needed for programs including Meals on Wheels (MOWs), VPAS Cafés; and transportation to Cafes and/or to medical appointments or other destinations in the Rockbridge area. A full position description is attached.

QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge: Familiarity with Buena Vista, Lexington and Rockbridge County roads. Safe driving techniques and traffic laws in VA.  Familiarity with recreational and educational interests of older adults and aging issues preferred. Current Virginia driver license with clean driving record. Experience operating a cargo van preferred. At least one-year experience in the human services field preferred.  

SKILLS: Attention to detail; problem-solving; time management; organization; critical thinking, and establish and sustain interpersonal relationships. Excellent customer service skills.

ABILITY: Operate a van safely on confined city streets and rural roads in Rockbridge County; perform routine maintenance checks on vehicles; maintain required paperwork to policy standards; work independently and as part of a team; lifting and carrying 30lbs repeatedly.

Team Support Specialist

LOCATION: 985 South High Street, Harrisonburg VA

DAYS/HOURS: Monday – Friday between the hours of 8 am and 4 pm.  Days and number of hours vary based on part-time or substitute position.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Team Support Specialist (TSS) provides support as needed for programs including Meals on Wheels (MOWs), VPAS Cafes, Aging with Confidence; and transportation to Cafes and/or to medical appointments or other destinations in the Harrisonburg Rockingham region.  The TSS is responsible for vehicle checks and maintenance under the supervision for the Nutrition and Transportation Manager.  

QUALIFICATIONS: Successful candidates must have excellent driving skills, customer service, communication, organization and time management skills; and be able to work independently and as part of a team.  Attention to detail, compliance with confidentiality rules, and sensitivity in working with vulnerable populations are a must.
